Antique recipe book ( update)

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned about my late Grandma’s cookery book which she gave me when I was a child. Well, a friend and I visited the @BBC_ARoadshow at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire and I took my little book with me.

https://thereadingshed.wordpress.com/2017/07/10/my-grandmas-recipe-book/

The expert ( pictured with me) informed me that it was obviously a well used recipe book which would have been kept in my Grandma’s apron pocket and would have been used daily.

He also told me it was only of sentimental value which I kind of guessed. I am quite happy to have my little blue cookery book with all of it’s quotes and recipes of bygone days in my possession for years to come.

To think that Grandma carried it in her Pinny ( apron) while cooking for the family, makes it even more special.

My Grandma’s Recipe Book

#BookBlogger  This week I’m heading to @BBC_ARoadshow at @CastleHowardEst, not too far from where I live. When I was 14 years old my elderly Grandma died. Years earlier, while playing in the attic of her old #Victorian home,  she gave me a very small #Antique #Recipe #Book of which I still have.

I know nothing else of its origin. Whether it is worth anything or not but there are so many interesting snippets inside it’s pages I thought I would share them with you.

The book is called : GOOD THINGS, Made, Said & Done it is the Thirty-sixth edition and printed in 1898.

This book is so fragile, some of the pages are falling out but nothing has been lost.

The recipe index has a lot interesting ingredients. Powdered Egg obviously because of the era, was the norm in some of the recipes.

Anything you fancy here?

There are also a few remedies too, just incase the “Giblet Pie” doesn’t agree with you.

It really is such an interesting book with little “quotes” throughout the pages. For example “Children and Chicken will always be picking”. And “Let the Ticking Clock Guide The Boiling Crock”

One last little gem in this book the size of my hand, is this advert for “Fennings”

I am going to have this book in my bag at #antiquesroadshow just incase there is anyone to ask a little bit more of its origin. It’d be lovely to find out a little more, don’t you think?

Killer Affair by Rebecca Chance

As a #BookBlogger, a lovely surprise popping through my post box in the shape of a #Book from @panmacmillan can make a lady screech with delight, #KillerAffair by @MsRebeccaChance, did just that for me.

The cover is so sparkling yet made me want to open up the pages quickly to find out exactly what was going on.

What can I say but WOW!! This is such a well written book of revenge, jealousy, sex, betrayal, laughter, it has it all and I could imagine laying on a beach reading this book.

I did think that some of the characters in the book reminded me of certain celebrities so while I read I saw their faces. This is one of those books you really cannot put down, so ideal to takeaway with you.

I rate this book 5/5

Isolation Junction by Jennifer Gilmour

#BookBlogger 📚  I knew I had to read and #review @JenLGilmour book “Isolation Junction” as soon as I heard about it as it is a subject so close to my heart, yet something only those very close to me know exactly the true impact it has had on me.

This truly had me in tears. It is a well written account and I really do applaud Jennifer for writing about such a “behind closed doors” subject. People do not realise that Domestic Abuse is not just Physical abuse but Mental Abuse too. Even typing out this review, I am crying.

People need to read this book so they know the kind of torment that others are going through, yet are either too scared or just “can’t get out” of the relationship. And to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that help is out there.

I rate this book 5/5

Broken Branches by M Jonathan Lee

This very happy #BookBlogger discovered a brand new Publishing Company called @hideawayfall and I’ve fallen in love!

What a friendly bunch they are and after posting me a copy of @MJonathanLee great new book Broken Branches, I really couldn’t wait to get my reading head on again after a short break of reviewing.

Broken Branches was just what the Doctor ordered.

Description

‘Family curses don’t exist. Sure, some families seem to suffer more pain than others, but a curse? An actual curse? I don’t think so.’

A family tragedy was the catalyst for Ian Perkins to return to the isolated cottage with his wife and young son. But now they are back, it seems yet more grief might befall the family.

There is still time to act, but that means Ian must face the uncomfortable truth about his past. And in doing so, he must uncover the truth behind the supposed family curse.

My Thoughts

This was a really enjoyable read, at times I did get confused and had to keep turning back the pages to see if I had missed something until I realised it was a book where one chapter is here and now and the next chapter is from years ago.

There was certainly plenty of mystery to keep the reader thinking, I love books like that. True page turner’s where nothing is as it seems.

This really is a well written book and I would love to see this story as a TV Drama. I would most certainly be hooked. Broken Branches left me wanting more. Maybe I’m just greedy but I seriously enjoyed this book.

DO NOT DISTURB 😎

The Beachside Sweet Shop by Karen Clarke

#BookReview 📚📚  Thanks  @bookouture you’ve done it again. Top #Author @karenclarke123 has written a fabulous book which really made me smile.

The Beach side Sweet Shop has such a gorgeous cover, I felt I could have sat on that very deck chair and read my books on it! As I was actually brought up in a sweet shop I smiled all of the way through this gorgeous heartwarming read. A lot of the sweets reminded me of my childhood.

The fictional Seaside town of Shipley sounds gorgeous, I almost packed my bags and started looking on TripAdvisor for a place to stay. The characters and storyline are just everything I adore in a book. I can honestly say that I felt quite sad to be saying farewell to everyone at the end.

The Beachside Sweet Shop is going to be a #SummerSensation

I rate this book 5/5

Description

Chocolate fudge, butterscotch and raspberry bonbons… treat yourself to some sugary treats, a big slice of friendship and a sprinkling of romance at The Beachside Sweet Shop.

When Marnie Appleton inherited a sweet shop from her grandfather she was determined to do his legacy proud. The shop has been a much-loved feature of the little seaside town of Shipley for years, but now Marnie needs to bring it up to date, and she’s recruited gorgeous new assistant Josh to help.

Marnie gets busy redecorating the shop and choosing delicious new sweets to stock, but things are never that simple: new neighbour Isobel, a fame-hungry blogger, is on a crusade against sugar, and she’ll go to any lengths to secure bad publicity for Marnie’s shop.

Marnie fights back with homemade sugar-free treats, but with her best friend Beth heavily pregnant, her grandmother Celia recovering from an operation, and her very recently ex-boyfriend Alex returning to Shipley with a new love, Marnie has a lot on her plate.

And then there’s Josh, with whom Marnie is struggling to keep her relationship strictly professional…Will both the sweet shop and love flourish?

A deliciously heartwarming read about family, friends and handmade coconut ice. Perfect for fans of Cressida McLaughlin, Debbie Johnson, and Tilly Tennant.
